I teach clarinetists of all levels: my current studio ranges from ages 8 to 82. Both in-person and remote lessons are available (currently during COVID-19 all lessons are remote until further notice). I have been a guest artist and given masterclasses at numerous music conservatories and college music departments, both in the US and abroad. My students have been accepted to the Juilliard School, Mannes College of Music, Tanglewood Music Center and other institutions; many of my younger students have received high rankings at NYSSMA, All-State and other competitive forums.
I use varied techniques matched to the individual dispositions of each pupil. The one approach I try my best to maintain for every student - whether a fourth-grade band newbie, conservatory-bound young adult, or older person brushing up on their skills - is one of 'Clarinet Context'.

A synergy of ear, embouchure, air production and voicing, it encourages the student to constantly assess their approach within the stylistic context of the particular pieces they are learning: from Classical, Romantic, Modern, Postmodern, Minimalist, Aleatoric, etc. to Broadway, Wind Band, Soundtracks, and Pop/Rock/Top 40.
It aims to develop a playing style that exudes technical and interpretive adaptability: allowing good intonation and blend with other instruments while developing a focused individualized sound with both control and flexibility - whether for Spohr or Stockhausen, Weber or Webern. It avoids many of the traditional rote methods of practice that force the student to mindlessly repeat passages - often to their detriment - in favor of efficient, conscientious, and musically-informed learning systems that keep the pupil actively engaged with their work. It acknowledges that music written by different composers, from different eras, in different styles, cannot be learned or interpreted by one traditional approach alone - and that the process of highlighting this contrast can itself be used as a tool for the clarinetist to find their own unique voice, along with technical and musical confidence.
